Mark Quail has been a lawyer in the music business since 1990. His current practice includes work for artists, composers, record companies, digital download websites and music streaming companies. Mark's legal career has been divided between work in law firms and what were some of Canada's leading music corporations including EMI Music Publishing Canada and Alliance Atlantis Communications. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mark worked as a band roadie and music journalist.
Mark is the managing director of Q&A Music Rights Administration Inc., a music publishing company that focuses on electronic music. Q&A's clients include Richie Hawtin, Carlo Lio, Matthew Jonson and Pleasurekraft. Mark was a founding member of Berlin-based digital applications company Liine (producer of Griid and Lemur). During the 2000s Mark was a partner in Distort Recordings which had three platinum records in Canada with Alexisonfire and one platinum record with City and Colour via Distort's off-shoot label Dine Alone Records.
Mark is a co-author of two legal text books: Entertainment Law in Canada (Butterworths/LexisNexis) and the Information Technology and Entertainment edition of Canadian Forms & Precedents (LexisNexis). He is also the producer of "The Music Law Podcast", a North American first in this arena. He has appeared as a panellist or moderator, at various music industry conferences including MUTEK in Montreal, Amsterdam Dance Event in Amsterdam, the International Music Summit in Ibiza, Spain, the Winter Music Conference in Miami and Canadian Music Week and NXNE in Toronto. Mark has appeared on CBC Television in Canada and has been quoted in Billboard Magazine commenting on music business and cultural affairs issues.
Mark also produces electronic music and has releases on Secret Weapon Records and Deep Tip Records along with tracks licensed to various international electronic music labels. Marks newest release will be an EP on Black Nation Records scheduled for the Fall of 2014.
